HISTORY OF THE ALUMNI CHARITY CHALLENGE

The Alumni Charity Challenge was established in 2013 by the VCU Alumni Chapter with Mason Alumni Network in Richmond (#MasonRVA) one of only seven alumni chapters in attendance on a cool rainy day. Over the last 10 years, the challenge has grown to include over 40 alumni chapters and collecting more than 797,000 pounds of canned goods. Feed More collects, prepares and distributes food to neighbors in need across 29 counties and five cities in Central Virginia. This year 34 schools will be represented and we have the goal to collectively raise 150,000 pounds of food (75 tons).

Despite the rain in 2013, Mason Alumni embarrassed VCU alumni and then did it again in 2014 on their own turf in Richmond (RVA) by donating nearly twice as much food as all other local alumni chapters combined, In 2015, 2016 & 2017 Mason Alumni finished 2nd or 3rd behind VCU and/or Virginia Tech alumni. In 2018 with the addition of online giving and out-of-state schools, the big boys from the Big 10 came to play and took the top spots, but Mason reclaimed the top bragging rights for Virginia schools. This year is the first year since the pandemic MasonRVA has participated in the Challenge since the pandemic. We know we are #1 in Virginia so let’s do it again this year and see if we can beat the “big boys” like we did in 2006!

HISTORY OF THE ALUMNI CHARITY CHALLENGE

Mason was one of seven of the original schools invited by VCU to participate in the 1st alumni charity challenge at Hardywood in 2013. It rained that year so attendance was small, but since then the Alumni Charity Challenge has collected over 94 tons of canned goods with the support of over 30+ colleges from in-state and out-of-state. Feed More collects, prepares and distributes food to neighbors in need across 29 counties and five cities in Central Virginia. This year 41 schools will be represented and we have the goal to collectively raise 150,000 pounds of food (75 tons).

Alumni Charity Challenge - Wednesday, September 20 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. @ Hardywood Park Craft Brewery

Alumni Charity Challenge – Wednesday, September 20 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. @ Hardywood Park Craft Brewery

This is 5th annual Alumni Charity Challenge and VCU is doing more than a little smack talking (see t-shirt above).   Mason Alumni embarrassed VCU alumni in 2013 and 2014 on their own turf in Richmond (RVA) by donating nearly twice as much food as all other local alumni chapters combined.  This year VCU alumni want break the 2-2 tie with George Mason and claim the “BEST TEAM” trophy for the 3rd year in a row.  Obviously Mason alumn cannot let that happen.

Help Mason this year by bringing non-perishable donations to Hardywood Brewing from 5:30-8:30pm.  The good news is that for the first time if you cannot bring food to the event, you can donate online until 11:59pm September 20 and help Mason Alumni in Richmond BEAT VCU!  Even our alumni friends in NOVA and beyond can help out!

And while you in the giving mood, take a few minutes to visit Give Mason page and make your annual donation of $25 or more (great habit to get into like changing your batteries in your fire detectors when we change our clocks an hour to spring forward or fall back).

And you do not have to register to attend the event, but we would love to know you are coming!

Looking forward to seeing you on September 20th and with your help, lets BEAT VCU! (and the Hokies, Wahoos, Dukes, Tribe, etc.)

With Patriot Pride,

Rob.

Once again, MasonRVA is participating in the Annual Alumni Charity Challenge and we need your help! We won this challenge the first 2 years and want to reclaim the trophy on Wednesday, Sept. 14. We will be collecting canned goods to benefit needy families in the Richmond area at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery from 5 – 8:30 p.m. All donations will benefit the Central Virginia Food Bank.

Beat VCU, LSU, UNC,… Mason Alumni going for the 3-PETE!

acc-cupMason Alumni in RVA (w/ help from our fellow alumni in NOVA) won both the 1st and 2nd Alumni Charity Challenges hosted by VCU at Hardywood to benefit the Central Virginia Food Bank.

The first two years the challenge was limited to alumni chapters from Virginia schools including VCU, UVA, VaTech, JMU, VMI, etc. so the competition was good, but not good enough to beat MasonNation.  This year the event will be expanded to include alumni chapters from out-of-state schools and we expect participation from schools with strong local alumni chapters like LSU and UNC so a 3-PETE is not a given.  If you have been thinking about getting involved, now would be a good a time 🙂

The first planning meeting with members of the alumni chapters from all the other schools will be next week  (May 11-14, exact day, time, and place TBD).  If you would like to get involved and participate in the planning, or just want an excuse to meet a few other local Richmond alum for a drink after work, send an email rob@masonrva.com and we will let you know when and where the meeting will be next week (we will also post the event on the blog and you can just show up).

Go Mason!

The VCU Alumni Richmond Chapter will be hosting the 3rd  Annual Alumni Charity Challenge with fellow Richmond alumni chapters.  As you may know, we had a terrific turnout last year and had terrific weather as well. Last year, the Alumni Charity Challenge raised a total of 5,649 pounds of canned good for Central Virginia Food Bank in 3 hours with the participation from 13 different schools. This year we are excited to expand the event with out of state universities to compete against the State of Virginia Colleges and Universities.
