Back to the Future

And yes, when the Green Machine (the royal “we”) beat the Web (the Richmond Alumni team), “we” (barring an upset – GO Team DRC) get to play Ram Nation on their home court just like, oh just about every CAA Tournament between 1996- 2012 (only worse, because the TBT is at the Siegel Center not the Richmond Coliseum – and by the way – someone tell ESPN the Siegel Center does NOT give the Web a “home-court advantage” even if is in the same town – see ESPN’s Ranking every team… below).

Alumni Weekend – October 11 – 14, 2018

The GMUAA has great plans for alumni weekend in the future and some how the party planners were able to add some of those plans to this year’s event!  I am kinda thinking this year will be #MasonAW version 1.5.  The goal for alumni weekend is to engage alumni from every generation all weekend by including activities that are family friendly, energize young alumni, appeal to cultural alumni chapters, and maybe even allow some the old timers relive the glory days of their past.

Be sure to click on the banner to visit the official Alumni Weekend site and checkout “What’s New This Year” and register.

And I want to invite everyone to join me Friday night 6:30-8pm for “Wiskey, Widgets, and Wonks” in the Nguyen Engineering Building Atrium (full disclosure – my son will be showing off his team’s Senior ME design project – a robot called “Thunder Rat“).  If you are a basketball fan and plan to attend “Mason Madness” at 8pm, Eagle Bank Arena is a short walk from the event.

Recommended Hotel
I am working on negotiating a MasonRVA rate, but standard rates are < $100 / night and there is a nice bar in the atrium to meet up at the end of the day.

Aug 7th 7-9:00pm – 2018 Richmond Student Sendoff @ Uptown Alley   (map)

The Orientation and Family Programs and Services office in coordination with Admissions will be hosting a Summer SendOff for entering Mason students in Richmond. The event will take place on Tuesday, August 7th from 7-9:00 pm at Uptown Alley.  MasonRVA will be representing the alumni association to welcome the new incoming patriots and hand-out MasonRVA t-shirts to students and family members.

Aug 13th TBD – Patriot Club & MasonRVA @ Redskins Training Camp   (map)

Mason AD Brad Edwards and Associate AD Darrell Green (both former Redskin players with a few Super Bowl rings) will be at Training Camp on Aug 13th and plans are in the works to coordinate schedules between Redskins practices, media opportunities, etc.  We will post more details as they become available.

Sep 12th 5:30 – 8:30pm – Beat VCU! 6th Annual Alumni Charity Challenge @ Hardywood Park Craft Brewery   (map)

MasonRVA won the challenge in 2013 & 2014 and we need support from all alumni to take back bragging rights!  The Alumni Charity Challenge was established in 2013 by the VCU Alumni Richmond Chapter. During the past five years, the Alumni Charity Challenge has collected over 40 tons of canned goods with the support of over 30+ colleges from in-state and out-of-state. The Central Virginia Food Bank serves 31 counties and five cities, from the Northern Neck to Louisa County and south to the North Carolina border.

Oct 12 – 14 – Alumni Weekend @ George Mason University

Save the dates and plan a trip back to Fairfax to party with you Mason alumni friends from around the country that are not lucky enough to live in Richmond!

January 2019 TBD – Mason Lobbies and Legislative Reception

Personally, this is my favorite event of the year, not only because we get to talk about our favorite institution of higher learning to our representatives at the State Capitol, but because it is a great opportunity to meet and mentor students attending Mason today (future Mason Alumni).  Due to the reconstruction of the legislative administrative building we may not get to visit representative w/ students this year, but Mason Alumni are always welcome to join President Cabrera and other Mason dignitaries (including some representatives who are Mason Alums) at the Legislative Reception.  We will post details as we get closer to the date.

The First 50 Years of Mason Alumni – Alumni Interview

Time is a valuable as dollars, so I do not take asking for a bit of your time lightly. The Alumni Association is working hard to collect as many interviews from Mason Alumni before the start of Alumni Weekend this Friday (Oct 13) as possible to help commemorate our first 50 years with a year long celebration that will culminate in a Gala Event in the Spring of 2018.  If you have not already been interviewed by an alum, please give a bit of your time to fill out an interview form to contribute to the celebration!

(you can click the interview form link above or fill out the form below)

Thanks, Rob.
